Communication skills can help medical practitioners ensure a clearer exchange of information to patients as well as develop the feeling of trust throughout treatment. It begins with the adoption of a model based on patient-centered communication. This thought model addresses the issue of developing effective communication and a healthy patient-physician relationship. The model displays the need to elicit patients concerns, address informational and emotional aspects of concerns, and respond to those concerns accordingly.
Your communication goal as the practitioner is to develop rapport with your patients while giving clear expectations, guidance, and results. You must listen to their concerns and by addressing them it will build higher trust, comprehensive understanding, and patient satisfaction, which in turn could decrease the likelihood of a malpractice claim. By following this model and protocols your communication should ultimately be associated with a higher patient satisfaction.
